 I purchased a GMC vehicle and a couple of weeks later it started running rough. The service engine light would come on only when the out side temperature dropped below 30 degrees F. The code read P0300 (random cylinder misfire). I went to an Autozone and they read the codes with a scanner for free and recommended and expensive tune-up to fix the problem. I read many in depth technical refrence manuals. They all seemed to recommend expensive fixs to my problem. Then I thought of the basic theories of the basics of engine diagnostics. I was always told many years ago that it only taks 3 things to make a engine run. If you have a problem with one of those 3 basic elements (1.Air 2.Fuel 3.Electrical) or more than one of those basic elements you will have problems with that motor.
The solution to my problem was simple. The P0300 code was cause by water in my gas tank I believe.I spent 1 dollar for a product called HEET which dries the water that is common in fuel>
